Today we continue to celebrate the Ascension of Jesus. An impossible mystery to understand, Christ did not simply walk off into the sunset, equally we find it difficult to believe the literal interpretation depicted by so many medieval images of feet dangling from a cloud! Yet the extraordinary way Jesus disappeared from the disciples sight somehow did compel their attention. They were transfixed. This person- living, crucified, risen always enticed, intrigued captivating all around Him. But theres no point in gazing up to heaven. He is much closer.
The Gospel of the day takes us back to the last discourse before His arrest. Jesus is praying for His disciples, those whom God has given Him, that they might be one and have eternal life. He prays for those who know Him. Ascension-tide reminds us that this task of praying for each other has been entrusted to us as disciples. Christ is taken from us and He, in His going entrusts the work of this world's salvation to us! Walter John Cavadia Ivens RIPIn the season of Easter, Walter has gone to be with his Redeemer, in whom he trusted. Walter was a big man, in every way. A gentle giant, a real gentleman, someone worth knowing are some of the ways he has been described to me this week. He was someone who espoused the true meaning of so many good things in life, and particularly the sacrament of marriage, being married to his beloved Mary for over 52 years. We pray for the peace of his soul and the comfort and consolation of his family as they mourn his death. His funeral is this week and is a family funeral. There will be Service of Thanksgiving for his life on May 28th at 3pm, to which all are invited. Christian Aid WeekEach year our churches have worked very hard to support Christian Aid
in its attempts to fight long term poverty across the world. The sad thing
is that the situation is getting worse in spite of their work, together
with other aid agencies. Global food shortages and price rises, brought
about by various factors are not helping. Christian Aid seeks to help
people help themselves. Will you help us to help them, please?

Thank you!...to Prebendary Dr Brian Leathard, the Rector of Chelsea for travelling from the flood-plains of SW3 to delight us and inspire us on St Georges Day. He reminded us that like St George we have a number of our own dragons to slay, particularly when it comes to sharing our faith. Thank you to Andrew who composed some lovely music especially for the occasion. To the readers and intercession leaders; to Joy and Angela for their singing; to Shoba and Jeremy; to Richard and Steve our catering supremos and their helpers; thank you for the very kind gift of so much lovely champagne and thank you to all who helped in so many ways! A wonderful evening and very good to see some old friends back with us. The Sacrament of ConfirmationConfirmation is one of the significant milestones along the Christian journey. To confirm means to make firm, to fulfil, strengthen, or reassert strongly. At our confirmation we confirm the promises that were made at our baptism. For most of us, these promises were made for us, early in our lives. Confirmation now means owning them for ourselves, publicly declaring that We are a follower of Jesus Christ and that we want our faith in Jesus to shape our values and priorities. This year we have 5 candidates for Confirmation on the 22nd May (Corpus Christi) at St Mary Abbots church at 7.30pm. It would be very good if as many as possible were able to support our candidates, please? The Feast of Corpus Christi will be transferred to the Sunday next. Discussion GroupThe Lent discussion group decided to continue their discussions on a monthly basis, the next meeting will be on Tuesday 29th April and the topic, Discovering Jesus. Do please join us we begin at 7.15pm. Help RequiredDo you think you can help out front of house during the St Georges Festival Concert on the 10th May? If you are able to assist, please have a word with Angela Lascelles. St Philips 150th AnniversaryOn 1st May, St Philips Church (Earls Court Road) will be holding a special Ascension Day Eucharist which will also mark the churchs 150th anniversary. Their special guest is the Bishop of London and everyone from St Georges has been invited to attend. The service begins at 7:00pm. Ascension DayOn the morning of the 1st May, we will be holding, here at St Georges, our own Ascension Day said Eucharist at 7:30am. I do hope that you will be able to attend. Saints day of the week: Ss Philip & James, Friday 2nd MayAs in the case of the other apostles, we see in James and Philip human
men who became foundation stones of the Church, and we are reminded again
that holiness and its consequent apostolate are entirely the gift of God,
not a matter of human achieving. All power is Gods power, even the
power of human freedom to accept his gifts. You will be clothed
with power from on high, Jesus told Philip and the others. The 23rd Annual Eric Symes Abbot Memorial LectureAlways an inspiring event at Westminster Abbey this years lecture will take place on Thursday 8th May at 6.15pm in the nave of the Abbey.
