In a world of inequality, those who are blessed with more of the good things in life are duty bound to do something for others who, through no fault of their own, have less. How else can God's abundant love and goodness reach them? In dinner party terms, the satisfaction of doing good deeds for someone in need is a mere hors d'ouvre in the context of the eternal banquet still to come. HelpOur base of volunteers doing anything in the church is dwindling all the time. We need help in all areas! Getting the church ready for Sunday, helping with the refreshments after service, reading, sidesman, flower arrangers, Sunday School leaders, keeping the church open in the afternoon and many more. Could you give just an hour a week to support YOUR church, please? Don't wait to be asked, please volunteer. Please? PeopleCongratulations to Tim Evans who has succeeded with his A Levels and now progresses from Christ's Hospital to his chosen course at Weston College for a foundation degree from Bath Spa University in Applied Art & Design. Our prayers and best wishes for his future accompany him. Bettie Griffiths continues to make slow but good progress following her recent fall. Our very own Fr Robert is at present walking the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela. Please remember him in your prayers that this might be a time of refreshment and re-creation. We extend our love and prayers to Richard & Claudia who were married here on Thursday. DiaryYou will receive shortly a diary of events covering the period between now and Christmas. Many people say that they would like to attend events if only there had been more notice. I hope this will meet this end and if for some reason you do not receive one there will be copies on the shelf at the back of the church. One of the reasons you might not receive the diary is because we do not have your details (address etc). Please ensure that you are a fully signed up church member by filling in and returning a Church Electoral Roll Form (not to be confused with the government E R form!). The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC)We are hearing much of the DEC during this massive humanitarian crisis in Pakistan, but have you wondered who they are and what they do? The DEC was formed in 1963. They are an umbrella organisation for 13 humanitarian aid agencies. At times of overseas emergency, the DEC brings together a unique alliance of the UK's aid, corporate, public and broadcasting sectors to rally the nation's compassion, and ensure that funds raised go to DEC agencies best placed to deliver effective and timely relief to people most in need. I am delighted to say that their chairman, Mike Walsh is coming to talk on the 14th October on the subject "where do your charitable donations go after a disaster emergency". Please book this important occasion in your diaries now. Dates in September for your diaryTues 7th The PCC will hold their bi-monthly meeting, details of your representatives can be found on the notice board. Wed 8th The Bible Study Group resumes and will meet fortnightly for lunch at 1230. Wed 8th is also the patronal festival of our neighbours at St Mary Abbots. There will be a special Sung Eucharist at 7pm on the 8th September when the guest preacher will be the Very Rev'd Dr John Hall, Dean of Westminster Abbey. Thurs 16th Lunch group meets at 1230 for 1300. The group meets every third Thursday. Sun 19th Visit of representatives of Church Urban Fund to receive a donation in to be made towards their work amongst the poor in this country in memory of Sir Richard O'Brien; whose report, 'Faith in the City' lead to the formation of this charity. This will take place during the 1000hrs service. Pakistan Flooding CrisisThis natural disaster has now been declared worse than even the Tsunami in terms of the number of people affected. Christian Aid has launched an appeal to provide immediate help for those going hungry in the Sind region of Pakistan. With eight million people displaced and rendered homeless with shortages of shelter, food and water across the Sind province, Christian Aid is calling on supporters to donate so that the charity can ensure that help reaches the communities in need. The full scale of this disaster is still not known but the effects upon an already impoverished group of people will take years to reverse. Christian Aid seeks to help those people affected to help themselves, will you help, please? You can donate online or use the envelopes at the back of the church. Last week we collected £150, please help us to continue helping our brothers and sisters in Pakistan. Stop PressThank you to all who have thus far generously donated to the Christian Aid appeal. To date we have sent nearly £3,000 in support of their work. (This rises to over £3,500 once Git Aid has been added and the bulk of this will be doubled by a generous match funding by the Reed Corporation). If you would like to give please place the money in one of the CA envelopes at the back of the church, fill in the Gift Aid details and let us have it back and we will ensure that it gets to those that most need it. Meditation GroupDid you know that our Meditation Group meets every Monday evening at 6pm here in church? It's a conducted meditation, with guidance given concerning the practice and purpose of meditation, so beginners won't feel uncomfortable. Entrance is through the side passageway door and it lasts for 45 minutes. this page last updated on August 30, 2010 |
